Q: What is the difference between the Asheville Humane Society and Buncombe County Animal Shelter?
A: In September 2010, Asheville Humane Society, in partnership with Buncombe County, opened the Animal Care Campus. The campus comprises two facilities: Asheville Humane Society Adoption and Education Center (red building) and the Buncombe County Animal Shelter (gray building). Asheville Humane Society is a nonprofit that owns and operates the Adoption and Education Center at 14 Forever Friend Lane. Buncombe County Animal Shelter at 16 Forever Friend Lane is owned by the County and operated by Asheville Humane Society. For adoptions, visit Asheville Humane Society. Q: Are you a no-kill organization?
A: While the phrase “no-kill” can stir many emotions in people, it can also be very confusing and misunderstood. Ultimately, much of the confusion about “no-kill” stems from the fact that there is no universally accepted definition of the term. One organization’s idea of no-kill can vary widely from another’s. Therefore, it is important to look into the issues surrounding the idea of “no-kill” in order to understand the ways in which organizations help animals. Asheville Humane Society operates Buncombe County Animal Shelter and uses every available resource to help all animals who come to the shelter. We provide rehabilitation for those animals who may need some extra care and attention before they are available for adoption at Asheville Humane Society's Adoption and Education Center or with a partner organization. We place all animals who can humanely and safely be adopted into loving homes. And we only euthanize animals who are so sick or behaviorally damaged that it would be inhumane or unsafe to place them into a home. We never euthanize for space and once an animal is made available for adoption at Asheville Humane Society's Adoption and Education Center, they stay in our care until they find a home. For some pets it's a matter of days until they find their family and others are with us for months. They all are provided the same care and love from our dedicated staff.
