Asheville Humane Society Intensifies Recovery Efforts After Tropical Storm Helene

Asheville, NC — Following the widespread devastation caused by Tropical Storm Helene on September 27, 2024, across the Appalachian region, the Asheville Humane Society (AHS) has been working tirelessly to protect and care for the animals affected by the storm.

Immediate Response: AHS and National Partners Step Up

The BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national leader in animal welfare, swiftly stepped in to support AHS. On September 30, the foundation delivered 1,000 pounds of critical relief supplies to Asheville airport via private aircraft. AHS staff and volunteers helped load and safely transport 57 dogs, 40 cats, and all of AHS’s “pocket pets” to Forsyth Humane Society in Winston-Salem. These relocated animals will be sheltered and ensured safe conditions until they find their forever homes in another part of North Carolina.

Over the past week, hundreds of good Samaritans have delivered thousands of gallons of water, tons of food, and other supplies so we can keep our animals alive. On October 4, the international charity, GLOBAL GOOD delivered six truckloads of pet food, with a continuous supply promised.

Ongoing Challenges and Needs

Despite these efforts, AHS will remain without running water for months, until the AVL water system is reconstructed. All of our staff were hurt by this storm, some of them lost everything.  For the first five days of this crisis, we ran on generator power, working around the clock to provide food, water, and care for the animals still housed at the facility.

Critical Needs

AHS is urgently seeking monetary donations to help with ongoing care. These resources will ensure AHS can continue to provide essential services to animals in our care and redeploy staff to become the primary pet food distributor in the Asheville area for the foreseeable future.

Community Support and Pet Food Distribution

As recovery continues, there is also a concern for stray or lost pets that may be displaced by the storm. AHS plans to set up five pet food distribution sites in coordination with many local partners. Community members are encouraged to bring their own reusable containers—preferably plastic grocery bags—when picking up food and supplies.

Partners and Gratitude

AHS expresses deep gratitude to its national partners, including BISSELL Pet Foundation, Chewy.com, the Humane Society of the United States, and Greater Good Charities, for their generous contributions to the recovery effort.
