- Keep your pets indoors! If it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for them. Pets are susceptible to the cold, and exposure to extreme temperatures can pose risks to their health. By providing a warm and sheltered environment, you ensure their safety and help keep them happy and comfortable throughout the winter months.
- Limit outdoor exposure. When record wind-chill lows are projected, limit outdoor exposure while allowing your pet to comfortably relieve themselves. If you want to go for a longer walk, add a sweater or jacket, and keep it brisk to build body heat.
- Use a humidifier if your pet is struggling with dry or flaky skin. The increased humidity can help maintain the skin’s moisture levels, providing relief to your furry friend. You will also want to limit bathing in the winter to prevent dry and uncomfortable skin.
- Don’t shave your dog during the winter! They need their fur for warmth, and if they’re a short or thin-haired dog, get them a sweater or coat. This protective layer not only helps maintain their body heat but also ensures that they stay snug and comfortable when facing the winter chill.
- Ensure that your pet has warm enough bedding and a place to snuggle up if the air in your house is chilly or if there are drafts. Make sure they have access to extra blankets and towels if it’s extra cold. Remember, if you need extra bedding or a blanket while sitting on the couch, your pets probably do too.
- Snow, ice, and salt can be harsh on pet paws. Protect your fur babies by using pet-friendly booties, Vaseline, or Musher’s Secret for their outdoor time. Clean and dry any skin exposed to salt. Ice, salt, and chemicals can be very irritating, so monitor this closely and keep an eye on those paw pads and in between toes!
- Ensure that all pets have access to unfrozen water. Cold weather can lead to dehydration, a common concern that many pet owners may overlook. The chill in the air, coupled with the dryness of the season, can contribute to an increased risk of dehydration in animals. Make it a priority to regularly check water bowls and replenish them with fresh water as needed. Adequate hydration is vital for your pets’ overall health, supporting their immune system and preventing issues associated with cold weather conditions.
- To help with boredom and excess energy from being cooped up, consider creating special enrichment opportunities: snack wraps and treats rolled up, lick mats, Kongs, frozen pupscicles, sniff walkways around your house, etc.!
