ASHEVILLE HUMANE RECEIVES $80,000 GRANT FROM PETSMART CHARITIES® TO HELP KEEP PETS AND PEOPLE TOGETHER

Asheville, NC – Asheville Humane Society received a two-year grant totaling $80,000 from PetSmart Charities to help keep more pets in loving homes and out of shelters in Buncombe County.

As the face of family changes over the years, what remains constant is the role pets play in our lives. Many people consider pets family members and it can be challenging to find resources when facing life changes and issues such as homelessness, lack of pet-friendly housing, military deployment or fleeing domestic violence in search of a safe-haven. Pet parents in these and other at-risk situations often determine they have no options beyond surrendering their beloved pet to a local shelter.

With this grant, Asheville Humane Society will help preserve the bond between pets and their people by providing emergency boarding and other services to pets in need temporary housing or assistance while their people are unable to care for them.
“By providing emergency boarding services to pets in our community while their people are going through a difficult time, we are able to keep these pets in their homes where they are loved,” said John Haas, Interim Executive Director at Asheville Humane Society. “If this service wasn’t available, many of these pets would be unnecessarily surrendered to the shelter, adding to the thousands of pets in Buncombe County who are already overflowing our local shelters and foster homes.”
“Pets give us so much,” said Kelly Balthazor, Senior Community Grants Manager at PetSmart Charities. “That’s especially so during hard times, when pets give their people comfort and cheer. We’re glad to lend support to the Asheville Humane Society as they find new ways to strengthen the human-animal bond.
