If you’re reading this, I believe it’s safe to say that you are an active supporter of not only Asheville Humane Society (AHS), but also rescuing animals altogether. Many people share the common interest and goal in helping animals in need however they are able. A lot of those same people would feel incomplete without animals in their daily lives. Jenna Yarosh Wilson is definitely one of those people.
As a local business owner, Jenna understands the positive impact that supporting locally can have to help organizations thrive. There’s no doubt that she is doing exactly that: thriving. Jenna is the owner of Patton Avenue Pet Company, and ten years ago, she started with one small shop in West Asheville and has since opened two more locations, one in the heart of downtown and the other in South Asheville on Hendersonville Road.
Jenna, along with her husband Billy (who has plenty of experience in the animal rescue world as well), have been incredibly generous to the animals in need in our community. For our upcoming Dine To Be Kind fundraiser, Patton Avenue Pet Company has stepped up to the plate to be our Presenting sponsor for the first time. We are thrilled and so grateful! On top of the sponsorship for the April 5th event, all three stores will also be accepting additional donations at the point of sale to raise even more for AHS.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Jenna recently to answer a few entertaining questions, and here’s what she had to say:
Daniel: Why did you choose to partner with Asheville Humane Society?
Jenna: We have always been passionate about working with rescue organizations, and we are impressed with Asheville Humane Society and their work in the community, especially the Community Solutions program that is designed to help families in need with several resources to keep their pets in loving homes.
D: What is your favorite thing about living in Asheville?
J: I think the values that people living in Asheville share: they’re passionate about animals, community and supporting local businesses and organizations, making it a wonderful place to live.
D: Do you have a favorite pet at home? Do any of them have a favorite parent? Be honest.
J: As a good mother, I could never choose a favorite! All of my babies are special and wonderful in their own way, just like my mom always said about us. I have 4 dogs a cat and a turtle, and they are all different, unique and quirky. As for their preferences, I am the best snuggler in the house, but they sleep next to Billy because he doesn’t kick as much in bed.
D: What’s your favorite piece of advice for new pet owners?
J: My favorite piece of advice is to try not to set unreasonable expectations for your pet. A lot of people create in their minds what they want their pet to be like, and at the end of the day, they are their own individuals that have their own personalities and it’s best to adapt to that.
D: What does the future hold for Patton Avenue Pet Company?
J: We are really happy with where we are in the community and we hope to continue to grow, not necessarily with more stores, but maybe offering more services in the near future.
D: Finally, what is your most memorable/funniest animal story you experienced at one of your stores?
J: Oh gosh! We’ve had many interesting animals come through our doors, including pigs, goats, mini horses, birds, cats on harnesses and even a duck with socks on! I think one of the funniest things that happens on a semi-regular basis is dogs will run away from their parents and run straight to our store. I hate that they’re running away, but they have a beacon to come to our store. There have been nice days with our front door open and a dog just casually wanders in, followed by their frantic owners just moments later. They know we are a safe space for them!
We look forward to all of the possibilities to partner with Jenna and her team. If you haven’t already made your way to Patton Avenue Pet Company, I highly suggest you stop by and say hello, do a little shopping and bring something special home to your furry family members. You can also shop on their online store for at-home convenience. Feel free to tell them I sent you!
